Asphalting – what’s the process?

Every job is different, but here are the general steps involved in providing our asphalting services:

  • Assessment and Planning

We first assess the site and evaluate factors such as soil condition, drainage requirements, and any existing pavement. We then figure out the scope of work and come up with a detailed plan for your project.

  • Site Preparation

Next, we clear the area, remove any vegetation, and deal with any drainage issues. Depending on the site, we may need to grade the area to ensure proper water flow and a smooth surface.

  • Excavation and Sub-base Preparation

The team then excavate the existing pavement or soil to the right depth. Next step is to prepare the sub-base. This may involve compacting the soil, adding aggregate base materials, and ensuring proper compaction.

  • Adding Base Layers

To provide a stable foundation, we then add a layer of aggregate base material, such as crushed stone or gravel, and compact it firmly. We may add extra layers, such as binder course or levelling course, depending on the job.

  • Asphalt Paving

Next, we lay hot mix asphalt (HMA) or warm mix asphalt (WMA) on top of the prepared base layers. Using specialised equipment, we spread and compact the asphalt to the desired thickness and smoothness.

  • Finishing Touches

Before we complete the job, the team ensures proper compaction of the asphalt, addresses any surface irregularities, and perform edge milling if necessary. Depending on the project we may also provide services like sealcoating, striping, or curbing installation.

  • Cleanup and Inspection

No job is complete before we clean-up the worksite and remove any excess materials or debris. Now’s the time for the final inspection! Alongside the client we check on the quality of work and make sure the team have delivered on all the job specifications.

  • Maintenance and Follow-up

We can provide maintenance tips on how to maximise the lifespan of the asphalt pavement.

What to look for when choosing the best asphalt contractor for your job

Experience and Reputation

It’s always best to look for asphalt service providers with a solid track record and positive customer reviews. Consider their experience in the industry and their ability to handle projects of your size and scope.

Licensing and Insurance

It goes without saying that your asphalt contractor holds the necessary licenses and permits required by your local authorities. Also, check that they have adequate insurance coverage, including liability and worker’s compensation, to protect you from any potential liabilities.

Quality of Materials

Inquire about the quality of materials the contractor uses for asphalt paving. High-quality materials, such as properly graded aggregates and asphalt binder, are crucial for a durable and long-lasting pavement.

A good work history and references

Ask your asphalt contractor for a portfolio of past projects like yours. This will give you an idea of their expertise and the quality of their work. You might also ask for references and contact previous clients to find out about their experience with the contractor.

Cost Estimates

If you’ve got no idea of the cost of your project, it can be useful to seek out detailed cost estimates from more than one. Make sure each quote includes all aspects of your project, such as materials, labour, equipment, and any additional services like line striping or crack sealing.
